Broad Green is one of the smaller residential districts in the London Borough of Croydon. Located in south east London, Broad Green is squeezed between the larger areas of Croydon – the administrative and commercial centre of the borough, and Thornton Heath – another residential area. The area was developed in the 19th century around the eponymous green – a small park with a triangular shape. Many houses and stores were built around it. Unfortunately, the only really notable landmark in Broad Green, the famous Safari Cinema house, was demolished in 2005, but the area is still associated with it. The Safari Cinema was opened in 1936 by the Associated British Cinemas and had the impressive capacity of 2300. After the cinema’s demolition the land was used to built several apartment buildings – 138 apartments to be precise, of which 52 were of the so called key worker shared-ownership type.
